Tie rod ends

Post by Born_disturbed » Thu Apr 07, 2011 11:57 pm

Hey all

Picked myself up a 91 Limited edition in black with tan the other day and i have a small wof issue which is driving me mental.

And this is it, my tie rod ends look like this (except factory)

*Edit: i cant post pictures as my post count is low so imagine a non straight tie rod here

and everywhere i go to get a new one insists that i should have these

*Edit: imagine a straight one here

now after bing told this a few times i bit the bullet and bought 2 of these different end however they slide straight over my steering rod so i have returned them.

And after returning home i looked through all my mx5 books and they show the same tie rod ends that i have not the ones i keep being told i should have (even by mazda)...

Help! surely someone has run into this or knows what i need to look for :( its all i need to get my new car a warrent!

Cheers in advance, David.

PS. If anyone has a cheap soft top for sale, even damaged i would be keen, mine is well gone and i used most of my money buying the car :/

i have brought these through partmaster before without hassels
if they keep telling you you are wrong take the old one in and tell them to match them up

even try one from a familia of the same age (may be the same)

hope that helps

Okay all sorted now :D

sprsta - when i went in to each place i had it with me, they had no luck matching it.. Familia ones are vastly different and i even had my mate at partmaster check every single end they stocked, none were even close.

WOT - That looks like my one there ;)

In the end i got a call from a mate who used to work for BNT, he told me to go speak to a specific person at the Wairau branch. This person knew exactly what i needed, said they are listed as "Special Edition" so that makes sence for my car.

So now my $1000 MX5 has a wof and a reg :D and is very very fun to drive

Thanks for the help guys, replies are always appreciated ;)

Welcome aboard.
Those NA tierods are always a bugger to find aftermarket,Most places don't have a listing for them,BNT/Repco/Stocks i had to find a pair for a customer who's doing a B1600/MX5 driveline conversion.
BNT had them ? ,Thats lucky,Wouldn't have the part number by chance ?

Mazda should have known what they were(Curved type).
Apparently there is another version for the cars fitted with factory Bilsteins ,but i've never seen them myself.

I found information on the tie rods from cars with Bilsteins, would love the chassis code from one as those ends are better for cars with lowered suspension, they reduce bump steer ;)

Mazda had my chassis code and ordered me some, the wrong ones

And thank you for the welcome ;)

*Edit* I do have the part number on my invoice, it is SE-51839

Standard Tie rods aren't that hard to find when you have the part number (thanks Born-Disturbed),I did some homework on the Bilstein type,$80.00usd each ,as far as i can work out,Genuine only,no aftermarket copys to be had...at this stage, Checking with Tai supplier at the moment with the part number given by Peter(Broomfish)
Those original part numbers no longer work with Mazda ,They are now
NA01 32 280 ,But no listing on the Bilstein type with Mazda NZ.
The one's Peter found, are listed as genuine as well ,not Aftermarket .
Must be some New Old Stock in the states..
I'll get back to you guy's when we hear at work from Tai if the others are available,But i wouldn't hold your breath on it.

looking on allmazda.net there are multiple aftermarket part numbers for the first one, but no aftermarket for the 2nd one so i think Genuine only
listed at 87 euros so about the same as the US price

Or you could always swap to some of these reinforced tie rods
apparently they increase steering angle to the point of insanity

As Born_disturbed mentioned, BNT's part number for the tie rod ends is SE-51839. The tie rods or rack ends from BNT are WR02017.

The recommendation is to replace the locking washer if you are replacing the tie rods and you can only get them from Mazda. (NA02-32-126)

i had to do mine recentley and it was broomfish who gave me the part numbers searched high and low in mazda for them and they werent that helpful, also my chassis number was listed as non power steering and mine has power steering.i suppose as its an import lots were converted in japan land.anyway i had to use the 8an1 instead of the 8an2 for lowered bilstien suspension so if the 8an2 come up for sale i would be keen for a pair.
