Brake Upgrade - NA
Was looking into a brake upgrade on my 1.6 (but not any more ,brap brap brap)na, MX5 Mart have a 1.8 brake upgrade kit $450, but as the rotor diameter only increases by 20mm, is it a noticable difference? or has any one used any RX7/other mazdas larger brakes? Just looking for a very cheap and affective option. Cheers
Rotor Powered NA6

The 1.8 upgrade with good pads and good fluid is the most cost effective upgrade you can get. I am still using the 1.8 brakes for Targa events and track work and have not suffered any adverse effects apart from occasional lockups.
TG Sports, classic roadster - modern technology. NA1800, 99 head, 11:1 +2mm Wiseco pistons, Link LEM, Alloy f/wheel, JR headers.

The sport brakes are actually different again to the standard 1.8 brakes and I think were only available on some models from about 2001 onwards. I haven't heard of anyone running them in NZ but it is possible some imports may have them fitted.
The advantage of going with the standard 1.8 brakes is that they don't require a change of master cylinder if you are upgrading from 1.6. The sport brakes used a different m/cyl with a different bore size.

Haven't worked them too hard yet to be honest, need to get a rollbar in it and get out on track to do that!
Raised it 20mm to get it off the bumpstops and its quite happy on bumpy roads now, no more lighting up 3rd gear on bumps while overtaking.

Stock 1.6 brakes didn't do me very well at pukekohe,
3rd lap braking from over 200kmh into the hairpin and there was nothing. slowed it a bit but still ended up in the sand trap.
Since putting the 1.8 brakes in with some decent pads have done many laps without any issues.
I think the little bit extra size helps with not getting as heat soaked and decent pads make a really big difference

I'm guessing you have a fair bit more power than standard then, a standard Mk1 won't do 200km/h unless you drop it from a plane or something!last_resort14 wrote:Stock 1.6 brakes didn't do me very well at pukekohe,

Even so for them to unexpectedly fail after 3 laps when they've just had the straight to cool them down makes me think you had some kind of problem rather than just them being too small. Bigger discs will definitely improve heat dissipation though I agree.

haha yea
not quite standard, i have turbo'd it.
my top speed was limited by gearing, I was on the rev limiter in 5th gear just before braking at puke,
Yea i know, i was skeptical about the difference it would make, but the conversion was so easy so i thought I'd give it a go. I think the pads I had originally were crap also.

This pic from Ross' website shows the difference in pad size also, which probably helps too. remember the mx5 is still a much smaller car than most.
