Still looking for best tyre

Post by mazdad » Thu Sep 17, 2009 10:01 am

Had a bloody big piece of number 8 go through one of my rear tyres yesterday. Heard a 'tick tick' coming from rear offside so stopped just before home to remove the 'pebble', good job I didn't try pulling it out!
Anyhow, local Firestone place sorted it ($22.50 inc balance and valve) and quoted my $229.00 inc each for Potenza RE001 Adrenalin's.

Seem a bit pricey, also not too sure if the RWE001's are the best choice. Anyhow, took a look around and found this very useful comparison table some of you guys might like:-

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyres ... ortValue=0

Even lets you sort on most relevant heading.

Doesn't list Toyo Proxes T1R though, and those appear to be a poular type for NZ MX-5 users - any thoughts?

This topic has been flogged to death many times and its always the
toyo's I'm holding out for some t1r's too. But someone told me they
have too much sideways movement in the sidewalks. Probably not an
issue for track use.

Based upon the previous posts on here and elsewhere I plumped for the T1R's - $218 each from Affordable Tyres in Christchurch - nice people.
Will post my thoughts after they've bedded in - seems like folk reckon this can take up to 1500km?

Never heard about bedding tyres in before.

How does that work? What are the advantages of this?

Hi Viscarious,

Experience has led me to avoid expecting the very best performance directly after fitting new tyres. I always take it easy for the first 250-300km. However, reading comments on the web, it would appear that the T1R's silica-based construction sometimes needs a little longer (further?) to realise their true roadholding abilities.
Whatever - I'm not a 'drifter' so I'm looking for good grip (wet & dry), low noise and good life and according to most folk it seems the T1R's are a good option, we'll see.

Interesting. Thanks for that.

Does that mean that if you don't take it mellow for the 1st 400km that you will never see the true potential of the tyre or just that they read their true potential after such a period of time / travel?

Regards
Dave

it seems there's a couple of issues in the mix here

- heat cycling http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/ ... ?techid=66
- mold release http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=176572

the mold release goop is the one you're probably more interested in, unless you're heat cycling some race tyres!

so you'll want to take it easy-ish, only so you don't slide off the road ;)

cheers-
j
