Bad highway Vibration

Post by 1UZFE » Thu Aug 06, 2009 5:41 pm

Hey guys,

I've got a pretty bad vibration in my car.

It seems to be mostly on the highway, mostly from 95km/h... I mean the car really shakes unpleasantly.

I feel its coming from the rear of the car more than the front

Possibly a badly out of balance wheel, causing the typical ~65mph shimmy?

Could it be any bushes?

My car has 154k's on it. (1990)

Could be one of the following. Out of balance wheel(s), damaged rim, damaged tyre or some of the cheap imported tyres are even out of round. Cheers Stevo

Yeah, Oh well Ill have a look at getting my wheels balanced and see how they go.

I've got GT radials Champiro all round on Avanti rims... shall be interesting to see what the deal is.

Just wanted to check its not any specific parts, on my BMW there was a specific control arm responsible for a 60mph shimmy..

one fix recommended is a "precision" balance, which involves balancing down to 1g instead of rounding it off to the nearest 5g.

If you are going to get a wheel balance you probaly should a descent wheel alignment at the same time,Particaly if you intend to upgrade power plant,At least you will know the car is straight and true before starting the big plan down the track at a later stage.
It is 19 years old remember :) ,Style bars seem to help with this problem,
I've had a few customers come back with the comment on how much tighter the car feels after throwing one on.
Let the playing begin

Hi, on my 1998 series II I had similar problem and after spending a lot of time and money on wheelsbalancing etc yurned out to be an out of balance drive shaft. Second hand one fixed the problem.

I had similar bad vibration from a GT Radial tyre. Was pretty old and shagged though - out of round, flat-spotted etc.

What causes nastyvibrations most often for me is mud and gravel stuck to the inside of the wheels :?

Not sure about style bars but a proper rollbar (4-point, mounts to floor behind seats and beside top of rear struts) certainly tightened my NA6 up a lot, as did the lower suspension braces under the car.

does your car have any under body bracing on the subframe?

A lot of people find that if they fit the brace that goes between the two rear wishbone bolts on the subframe the vibration ceases. the way the subframe is designed it is like a big U shape and it can resonate and cause the famous shimmy. aftermarket (heavy) wheels tend to make it worse.

The 1800 cars came with the subframe braces as a factory addition.

i see you have the username 1UZFE.. does it actually have a 1UZFE fitted? because if the PPF brace has been binned then that will cause issues also.
