Machine shop to put groove in shocks ? Sth Auckland-ish

Post by GEEMCB » Sun Jul 08, 2007 1:22 pm

Hi, all

Am thinking of putting an additional groove in my shocks so I can lower the spring perch retaining ring.

Anyone know who could do it, preferably in the South Auckland / airport area ?

Regards,
Greg

PS - I have read of one brave soul in the US doing it by hand with a hacksaw - I'd like to apply a little more science than that .....

You could try Airport Engineering, they are 'Jack of all trades' type of blokes.

Nice guys too.

If you are a competent welder you can buy the threaded section and weld it to the shock itself.

I belive he is referring to the cirlip grooves that hold the spring perch as pictured,

as opposed to an adjustable coilover or coilover type "sleeve" as you have mentioned similar to this

Are you wanting to groove your Konis lower?
This may be a bad idea as it will mean the Lower spring perch may rub on the drive shaft/Cv Joint...better to get some lower springs and have the perch higher.

^^^ good point, you would want to research prior to doing it......however im sure you could get away with say 15mm.

Stock NB shocks & springs in an NA

Post by GEEMCB » Tue Jul 10, 2007 9:00 pm

hi, all

OK - here's the full story. Here's the situation as orginally outlined to Shaikh from FatCat MotorSports -
- 1990 NA running stock springs, mounts & Bilsteins from (I think) an NZ new NB RS.
- Want to retain the NB shocks & springs but lower for cosmetic reasons. Car is used for daily driver & occasional spirited drive on our great MX5 roads. No racing or autox.
- Current ride height is 13.7" / 14.4" F/R in non-metric speak
- Aim is 12.75" / 13.25"
- Using 0.66 & 0.72 motion ratios for NA suspension gives a drop in perch height of 0.6" / 0.81"

Here is a thread to my correspondence on miata.net on the matter......

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=234058

Shaikh from FatCat MotorSports has advised the following ....

First, I wouldn't recommend lowering the car that much on the stock springs. The NB dampers will go to full bump at around 10.9" vs. 10" on an NA Bilstein. That's a full inch less travel! Which is why the NBs sit a bit higher. I would target 13"/13.5" f/r. You can use the stock stops in a pinch but my 46mm will give you more travel before bump stop engagement, esp. beneficial if you go to a stiffer spring later on.

Shipping will be $15 via USPS Priority Mail Int'l.

So - I'm planning on going with Shaikh's advice & not dropping quite so far. I'll obviously need to redo the maths which is straightforward - less straightforward is getting someone to actually put the new grooves in.

Hence the question :)

So yes, it's only the grooves I'm after !

Greg
