Pardon my ignorance, but does "45R16" mean that the tyres are a 45 profile for 16" mags?

I've got a set of these on my NB, which I'd like to be able to swap for a set of 14" combo with the more usual studs holding the wheels on to the hubs.

Is the swap easy or hard? Or ... ?

Correct. This is a good link that will tell you what those numbers will
mean:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/ ... p?techid=7

To see if they are correct (or close enough) in terms of being the same
size overall (circumference) as original MX5 wheels, this link is useful
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Note with wheels, you should get a similar offset wheel to stock also.
For the MX5, that offset is 45mm. The offset should be marked somewhere
on the wheel, or you can measure it. Useful link here:

Not sure what you are referring to here. Do these wheels not have 4x100
stud pattern as per MX5 standard? If they are already on you NB, I'd
assume they would? In which case, you can just take them off and fit
some different ones.

...I'm assuming you're not looking at those 6 dots in the centre
thinking there are 6 lug nuts under there..? That is just a glamour
cover and pulls off. Should be 4 lug nuts - 1/2 hour job to replace
with new wheels/tyres.

thanks.

I hadn't bothered to take the covers off before, as I didn't think that there was enough room for the 4 nuts I found after I had removed the last of the 6 screws. Yes, it was only at the end that I discovered that I only needed to remove the one nearest the valve. I was certain that there weren't six nuts. I was thinking along the line of their only being one.

What I forgot to check was wether or not the space between each nut was 100mm or not.

If there was only one... it would probably have previously been used in
Nascar or Formula 1 ;) I think that is what those caps are designed to
look like - a fake 'race car single lug nut'. Passenger cars will never
have only one lug nut - minimum will be 4.
What I forgot to check was wether or not the space between each nut was
100mm or not.
If they are mounted on an MX5, they will be. MX5 wheels are a standard
4 lugs at 100mm spacings. All MX5s have bolts at these spacings,
therefore all wheels bought to fit them have to match this.

Actually, I wouldn't have thought you needed to remove any of those hex
bolts - I assumed they would be just fake ones stuck on. Doesn't the
cap just pop off?

Glad you got it sorted

cheers

You can get alloy wheels for the road that can take one "lug nut" You have to have a modification done to the hubs (Or a spacer fitted) that will take the large threaded rod. Early Jaguar road cars have a centre lug nut (Knockoff).
The 100mm relates to the PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) for the four holes. If you measured from the centre of one hole to the centre of the oposite hole, it would be 100mm. The same as if you measured from the centre of any hole to the centre of the hub it would equal 50mm.

Of the 6 bolts. 5 are self-tapped into the cap, they are about 5mm long. The sixth is 20mm long ( screwing into the rim ) & is placed nearest the valve.

If it helps, they are a M6 thread, so any hardware shop should be able to provide a replacement. Albeit it one that doesn't look original. I suspect that I've got to find a friendly furniture manufacturers' supplier, to get it in black & hex.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that:
1. NA MX5s used 45mm offset, but NBs had 40mm offset.
2. Most of the early NBs, but not all, use 15x6" alloys (195/50 x 15 tyres).

Cheers, Ian

Most Engineering supplies shops will have M6 Cap screws in black or chrome. You just specify what length. (Measured from under the head to the end of the thread. i.e. M6 x 25).
