Rattling front brakes cured

Post by GEEMCB » Wed Aug 16, 2006 8:22 pm

Hi, all

This is not a specific product endorsement; more an idea that may help.

I'd put up with rattling front brakes for some time. Always checked out OK, but continued to rattle over broken or rippled road surfaces. Shims were in place as were the U shaped pad strings.

Anyway - I bought some CRC Disc Brake Quiet a few weeks ago. I had no idea what to expect, but it is an aerosol that creates a tacky red film that stays tacky. I applied a coat to both the pad steel backing plate & the shims. Probably shouldn't have done the shims too but put that down to inexperience.

Anyway - rattle gone. Quiet - bliss. :)

I may eventually get around to cleaning the excess film off the shims where it is visible, but that can wait. I guess that it'll pick up a layer of brake & other dust eventually, but doesn't seem to have done so as yet.

Sorry to report that the longer-term evaluation isn't so good - the rattle does re-assert itself. Not looked into it yet - but the quiet was very nice for a while !

the rear calipers on my NA1 have both been overhauled and they too rattle. Any ideas? :?

Rattling front brakes cured

The rear brakes on my NA and NB rattled after replacement pads were fitted.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that there is a small spring that stops
the rattle and this is often overlooked when pads are replaced. Performance
isn't affected, they rattle though and it sure is annoying! Mine still
rattle more than a year later.

Grant.

Quite right - there are W-shaped springs on the fronts & U-shaped ones on the rears (or the other way round) that locate into the ends of the pads & hold them back against the calipers. All of mine are in place & the rattle still happens ...

It can be the springs themselves as well. I have had them make a noise going down the driveway as I was standing near the wheel. (Fronts mainly).

The other thing to do is the big brake upgrade :D

$80 from my mates at Ace of Parts saw me heading home with 1.8l rotors & caliper assemblies. A few hours later the big stoppers were installed - most of that time being clean-up & painting (black on the hubs & gold on the new caliper bracket). It really is a very easy job to do - just have to remember that left goes to right & vice versa for the new caliper brackets.

Long-term evaluation pending a disc skim & decent pads, but initial impressions are just fine. And quiet !
