WTB LSD Options?

Post by Aurai » Fri Feb 20, 2015 5:38 pm

Hi all, new mx5 1990 1.6 open diff. Going to be using the car for gymkhanas and drift days etc. Want to keep the car road legal.

I would like to make it not have an open diff without resorting to a locked rear end.

I know there is the 1.8 swap and this is my favorite option, but I was just wondering what other rear LSD options I have that I can buy in NZ, or get to NZ for a price that wont make me have a heart attack??

I have been unable to find much on LSD's actually in NZ.

Also, where is the best place to look for the parts for a 1.8 swap and what is the rough ballpark figure?

Finally, does anyone have the parts for a 1.8 swap they would like to get rid of?

1.8 torsen swaps usually go for $600-700 complete(prop shaft ,2 driveshafts and diff housing), i got mine from mazline in Christchurch.

You can get LSD centers for the 1.6 ring and pinion but they are upwards of $800 and you still need to get them installed by a diff specialist

If you want to do something cheap, I have a 1.6 VLSD lying around, dunno what it is like as never had it in a car, but you can have it for $80.

the 1800 torsens are the way to go, and then one day you can score a KAAZ or OS Giken 2 way from the States.

The OS is default 1.5 way (yep... I may or may not have one...) but you can make it 1 or 2 way. Would recommend though, no shudder unless you stall the car (it makes lots of noise if you do, parents thought I crashed the car when I stalled outside their kitchen).

Both those brands are Japanese by the way and with the weak Yen and the strong USD, you're looking in the wrong place

Haha Cheers for the offer, I was actually on my way to pick up a VLSD amongst a few other things for a very nice price when you posted that.

No idea what condition this one is in yet (yet to get it into car) so I may still take you up on your offer!
