1600 to 1800 diff upgrade

Post by WideOpenThrottle » Sat Dec 21, 2013 5:31 am

Anybody know if I need just the half-shafts only and keep my CV's or do i swap the complete axles including CV joints as well?

Many thanks

Ok!...now that I have the 1600 driveshafts out it seems obvious to use the 1600 CV's as the 1800 CV's are slightly different in that the outer part of the CV where it goes into the hub is chamfered so will probably not fit right.

I only need the shaft between the diff and the CV,which is shorter to allow for the wider 1800 diff.

Actually! excuse my analogy but its the stub axle ends that are different so all I need to do is put my 1600 stub axle/cv's complete on to the 1800 half-shafts by the looks of it!

Due to the old 1600 CV's having done nearly 300 thou km and feeling rather tight and notchy I think while I am at it new ones would be a good idea! Hope BNT or ADL have some on Monday!....Repco couldn't help.
As usual a bit of chassis cleaning and painting while I have the clearance.
1800 drive shaft now in and just about to bolt up the bigger dif

Pardon my ignorance - What's the benefit of the 1800 diff?

Changes from a 6" to 7" so is bigger, can handle more power and fairly bullet-proof so I have been told.
Also the ratio is 4.1 as against 4.3 for the 1600 so is slightly taller and will give me a higher speed in all gears.
Downside if its relevant is extra weight & possibly slower on take-off but with my boosted engine I doubt if it will be noticeable plus might use a bit more in fuel.

Diff is in plus new rear outer CV'/stub axles and took out the rear muffler so now its got a straight pipe which exits on the passenger side-made the exhaust hangers out of some 200mm galv nails that I had lying around...only need to paint that now.And blow me down went to take it for a test drive and the rear wheel/s were locked up,thought it was something to do with the newer driveshafts or cv's.As it turned out I had a locked drivers-side rear brake pad caused by sticky/ceased calliper pins so all good now!
Test drive to come.

Plus you get more options regarding lsds. There's torsens and numerous clutch types out there for the larger diff. The only lsds I'm aware of is the cusco for the 6 inch diff (and the viscous I guess).

I thought the trick with that was to stick a banana in it? I mean, I'd rather that than a whole bunch (har har) of pissed off italians.

Just done a 10k test run and all is fine...seems a lot smoother and quieter with more bite to the rear wheels...only I couldn't to a proper acceleration test even in a straight line as I was starting to lose traction in the wet and I have 8mm of tread on my road tyres.

Will be interesting on my next track day.
