Best Coil Over for bang for buck

Post by Donovan » Tue Jan 29, 2013 12:23 pm

My brother has bought another MX-5, a turbo one this time (still managed to find another purple one, he's now got two of them), and the rear shock are leaking fluid.

They are HKS, and apparently they have to go back to Japan to get rebuilt, and ends up costing close to $1200, so not worth it. Autolign have had a look and they said they might be able to do it, but not worth it as the shaft's have pits in them, and are just going to fail again.

So he has to look at a replacement set. His mechanic said that he will just replace the rear set (they are the problem ones, front's ok) for about $800, can't remember what they were, Koni coil overs maybe, but I am in the thinking it is better to replace the whole lot for track work to even things out??

Anyway, choices at this stage are Yellow Speed Racing for $1350, BC Gold's for $1495, or HSD for $1550.

Anyone got any comments, preferences, knowledge about the above three. All of them are the same spring rating of 8kg/6kg

I have HSD on my Roadster and found them excellent, however they are the only coilovers I have used so am unable to say how they compare to other brands!

I would definitely recommend them, though.

I run the bc golds.
Can't compare but I have had no issues, have been in the car 3 years or so.

For $1500 odd Autolign can do a set of Revalved Bilsteins from memory with coilover sleeves.

Or you could buy the Bilsteins here and a ground control kit from the states.

I have driven.

NA bilsteins
NB Bilsteins
Koni Race
HSD

My vote is HSD with the Koni a close 2nd. Having softened the Konis I find them a lot better on the road...

The HSD was AMAZING on the road and I found no issues with them on the track...where they performed way better than I expected.

In complete seriousness, why are Gen 2 D2's not on the list? For the same price you can buy them and cert them. I've run D2's on a track car and they were fine, swapped them out for buddyclubs.

Have also been in a car running BC golds and I thought they were the bees knees.

Personally, it comes down to what he expects.. If it is taking some serious track work, look into Fortune Auto's. Almost bought a set myself after looking through dyno sheets and doing research but they were a tad expensive. (Considering my setup was 2/3 the price)

Is he going to daily drive it/track it sometimes or mainly use this car as his track car?

Mainly it's just a track day car, in fact I would say, it would be used 75% track use

Koni's are very highly regarded, other than that HSD's( 8) ) or BC Golds if they're comparable!

... Ohlins

But if you don't feel like spending that kind of money and not many people do
Just get some HSD's
I have heard good things about the yellowspeed coilovers aswell Trackspeed racing in the states has started using them in there track cars with good results

Good theory if you have time, but we don't. His shocks are pretty much stuffed, and he wants to do track days in it, and I want it out of my garage so I can put my one back in there to work on it.

Thanks for the replies, but he has bought a set of the HSD's today, got them at trade price via a friend of his for way cheaper than the price I had in the original post
