What wheel options came on the NA 1.8?

Post by Synco » Sun Nov 11, 2012 7:28 pm

Hey, i've just purchased my first MX5 a few days ago, its a '94 1.8 and is running on 14 inch alloys which means 3,500rpm in 5th gear at 100km on the highway. Im sure this isnt right, so could someone please tell me what the factory standard wheel size was for a NZ new 1.8 NA? Cheers

Those are the correct wheel size and revs on the motorway. You'll also find your Speedo out by up to 10kph

14 inch, 185? With a ratio of 60 is the standard size I believe, might be 195 though.

Didn't realise the 2002 SE wheels look similar-ish to the 6ULs or that the wheels seemed to get heavier over time

On the plus side, those 14x6" wheels are the lightest of the non-special edition wheels available.

My 1993 1.8 is NZ new, and the original wheels are 14x6 (45mm off set)with 185/60 tyres. A popular option is to put 15x6 wheels on (NB rims - 40mm offset - are a good option in my view), but with 195/50 tyres in 15 inch, your revs will be approx the same. The MX5 is quite sensitive to wheel/tyre changes, so beware of moving significantly away from the standard sizes/weights/offset, assuming the car is for road use. 15 inch wheels do offer a wider range of tyres which can be considered high performance.
