Cant decide on coilovers

Post by siren676 » Tue Oct 02, 2012 2:21 pm

I'm wanting to get some coilivers soon for my mx5. I can't decide between getting some rokkor ones off ebay or waiting another month or so and getting some oz's (bc golds).

Any recommendations?

What do you want to do with it is an important question.

Also I think I saw your car on East Coast bays road yesterday!

HSD

Rokkors are better than racelands but still won't last long also if you don't have NB top hats you'll want to get some as rokkors, racelands and FM VMaxx coilovers don't come with top hats

Save your money get HSD or BC/Oz
If you building a track car get Ohlins

More Suspension travel at a lower ride height as they have a higher mounting point (You can get extended tophats made but they arent as comfortable as an OEM piece) and make for a pretty smooth ride

Mine will be for sale when I can afford coilovers so when my holiday pay comes

Much nicer to bottom out on and not sure about the following (gets you lower or more suspension travel)?

I'm sure there are cheaper options out there for track cars other than Ohlins. Keith seemed to do well with Teins.

the spring seat is higher on the nb hats so your car will sit lower with the same shock travel

this is the na see the spring seat at the bottom

If you are going to be drifting, have you factored in what spring rates you want to run? If you just want to slam it, get the shittiest coilover on the market that will get you low. Anything under $1500 is not likely to be rebuildable and all will have a similar chance of blowing out a shock. Make sure you are using them within their recommended tolerances and you shouldnt have any surprises come warranty time

I wont be slamming but I will be Drifting, I did a lot of research before deciding on my setup. I will be running 8/6Kg which is what most guys Drifting Roadsters are running slammed or not.

If you want coilovers or if I was going coilovers, I would go with either a well known brand from Japan with few KMs or a brand that can be rebuilt in NZ. I wouldnt bother with cheap coils personally. Might be nothing wrong with them for normal use but from watching others I learnt that do it once do it right is always the best way to go. You spend the same amount in the end generally if you buy cheap something fails or something needs changing. Go with good stuff and it lasts forever.

Never considered what rates to run for drifting, it was ummm... interesting to drift on stock spring rates
I think ive got my meanings messed up about how low i want it, i'd be happy with 90-100mm to chassis rails (think CR classes it as moderately slammed)

 in that case get some coilovers with soft springs and throw the weight around

Was going to go with some MRP custom ones as they were the same price as the oz's but barry's discontinued his na/nb ones :(

Im 90mm front and 100mm rear. Thats the lowest I can go without modifying my springs. The shocks are good for lower, would need coilover springs and new perches.

Bilsteins :!: Rebuildable, amazing brand rep, revalvable, and cheaper than coilovers. Hit up Autolign
