LSD for NA

Post by warrior » Sun Jul 15, 2012 11:12 am

I can get my hands on a LSD diff for my NA for quite good money but want to know if it is worth the hassle of fitting it? What will this do for my car?

It is only a road car so do you guys think it is worth it?

Also how hard is it to put in?

Its possible your car already has one. Most NAs came with a viscous LSD anyway.

Also if you don't know what it's going to do for your car, I wouldnt worry about it.

If you're not sure what it does to the car, spend your money on something that you'll notice a difference with.

Suspension mods = best bang for buck imo.

Not that much point putting an LSD in "only a road car". Not tricky at all to install, though. And as Euen says, it's quite possible you've already got a viscous LSD from the factory.

Euen is right you might already have a vicous LSD after abit of wear they start acting like an open diff anyway

If you want a proper LSD there are 3 options

1. An aftermarket choice i.e. Maruha, Cusco, OS Giken, etc... (1, 1.5, 2 Way Optional)
2. A Rx7 13b non turbo clutch type LSD (1.5 or 2 Way?)
3. A 98+ Miata Torsen LSD (1.5 Way)

Jeeze wouldnt want to try shipping a 98+ Miata Diff housing and shafts from the States. But a 98 NZ one would do. WE DONT HAVE MIATAS

and they're left hand drive..... and they don't have side indicators on the guards (fenders if you're a yank)

Much more than just a name. That's why i cringe everytime i read about the right hand drive 'miatasaurus'.... but i'm just pedantic. haha

Are the LSDs in the MX5s really that bad? My red one would get both going unless it was very wet and at low speed. When I pushed mine to kick the back out it was very predictable and you could feel both wheels pushing it around.

Only time I noticed it acting like an open diff was on a wet skid pad which was like driving on ice anyway.

**Forgot to note, it had 170xxx k's, and was a 1990.

The problem with viscous diffs is that they only start to work properly when the speed difference between the two back wheels is quite high. So for example, they will work well in situations where one wheel is likely to spin up a lot, like on ice or snow, but less well on track where the difference between the speed of the back wheels is not very high at all. Add to that the fact that the more the diff heats up, the less the effect it has, and you dont have a particularly good diff for track driving at all.

The Torsen diff is an entirely different matter though and works well in almost all situations :)

LSD for NA

Post by jif » Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:15 pm

only Torsens (or open) diffs from the factory, tho you could get a Mazdaspeed/Kaaz/Cusco etc clutch-pack LSD as well.

Definitely not all torsens. Open diffs were quite common in both NA8 and NB8C.

I just call mine a Roadster. Thats what its reg'd as. And its not NZ new, so isnt an mx5 either. Haha. No idea why they called it an MX5.... Weird number, cos it doesn't have 5 doors, cylinders, seats... Anything. Whats the relevance of 5?

Totally offtopic by the way..... Hah

Probably an internal code for experimental cars.. not sure what happened to 1,2,3 or 4 but we all know the 5 and don't forget the MX6.....was very ahead of it's time when it came out.....thus possibly an "x" car as well...

just a guess.

Certainly has a unique look about it... Not my cup of tea though. Too much boot space for my likes
