What year? and a hard top at that :( Is this for practicality reasons? I was
expecting you found yourself a lotus (ahh Lotus Blossom.... never mind..
sounded better in my head).

Newbie needing assistance please.

Better chance if you post a link to the advert. There must be a forum member is Gisborne, I went to Wellington to look at a car on TradeMe, looked wonderful but was a piece of Sh*t close up. So definitely worth getting a local to have a quick look first. Also try the www.mx5club.org.nz they may be a...

NA seatbelts dangerous?

Try Brownie (Mazspares) or MX5Mart.co.nz there are two different lengths, I changed mine on my NA for the same reason. I assume that the JDM cars are designed with shorter legs in mind so the seat will be forward requiring a longer buckle stork, but when you have the seat all the way back the buckle...

NB LSD

Hi James There seem to be a few private NB sales under $12K, but then again any car looks good in a photo. Just before Christmas I went all the way to Wellington to look at a 68 Pontiac Firebird Convertible that had $50,000 of receipts and looked incredible in the photo's. It was just wow from acros...

Most bang-per-buck I can get for $500?

I have to agree 100% with Euen's well thought out comments. If I may add my 10cents. save your money and spend it on a manual MX5, it will greatly improve the performance, corner control and general fun. I have an automatic company car and I spend 45mins+ in the traffic twice a day in Auckland, this...

sr20?

Yeah but I think the SR20 will be much more drivable than an 1800 with a big slow spooling turbo, I've heard some of the 300HP MX5's have 2 stage digital control, 1-4000RPM...hmmm OK.... 4000-7000RPM OMG...... One down side of the SR20 is the weight, the whole deal of the MX5 is the 50/50 weight spl...

Diff oil

To the best of my knowledge the only time you need LSD specific oil is if it is a clutch type LSD. This is possible but not so likely unless your car has come form Japan looking modified, i.e. been owned by a boy racer who modified his car, diff upgrades are not cheap so there are usually other sign...

I have Teins on mine, they are quite a high spring rate (according to what I could find they are 7kg front 6kg rear) but the back one bottomed out the other day on a bumpy corner in Albany. I was...

Yeas indeed it can be done, there was a red one for sale on TradeMe back in 2006, I just got back from overseas and was on the last day of the auction, so I missed out :( I talked to him at length, he was asking $8K. He was running the SR20DET with a Link piggy back ECU, at full boost was getting 35...

Gearbox gaiters

STOP....

Just cut the old one off. And even though it doesn't seem possible, the new
one will slip down over the shaft with some oil. If it's an NA don't forget
you need to add oil into the top as it's a separate area to the gearbox
itself.

CD unit affected by heat?

Good point Euen, so stick with the known brands, Sony, Pioneer, Alpine etc
(but not BOSE) so you will be able to buy the adaptor cable from
Repco/supercheap/TradeMe and the installation becomes a 1000 times easier.

CD unit affected by heat?

Do you have a paper label on the CD? I found my CD's with labels will only play somethimes, I'm failry sure uit's due to the humidity and the paper thickness. If not that I'd also agree with heat, more of it's effect on the CD player not the CD itself. There are some great deals on MP3 players from ...

Broken pipe on lower thermostat housing: What is the fix?

Warning if I may, there is no temperature warning light on an MX5. One of my home made hose fittings came off once and it dumped all the water in seconds, I was on the motorway and would not have known had a guy behind me started flashing his lights. My advice is to get a decent barbed brass hydraul...

Just near the cook street offramp in Auckland. I tried some front seats in my car from there once and they were more helpful than most of the Chinese importers I've come across. Bit of a hassle though. The main issue with such imported products is quality, some are good but not many. It can be foam ...

Unless you are pretty short you'll have to go fixed back, all the tilt back ones are too deep in the base and you end up looking at the sun visor. Width is also an issue as it won't allow most tilt back seat to go all the way back. The downside with fixed back seats can be lumbar support and comfort...
