I haven't attempted to paint my vent rings (they're already black ) but
have painted some plastic parts in my OTM.
I found that giving them a light sand before painting really helped.

Just yanking them out worked for me, but mind you don't scratch anything.

One wheel drive sucks
I would try and hunt down a second hand one from a import from a mazda wreckers - I don't think that the MX5 one is the only one that would fit in the housing - but I could be wrong. I'm guessing about $1400 NZ for a new one, possibly $500 to $900 for a second hand one from a wrecker if you can find...
