lightened flywheel

The Flywheel bolts do not have metal tags on them but a fairly tight. The easiest way to lock the flywheel while loosening the bolts is to use a large screwdriver on the ring gear locked against the starter housing. You need two people for this job. The ring gear will be part of a new flywheel. If y...

Hi Ian I had the flywheel lightened and balanced by a machine shop in Hamilton that Don from Autoway recommended. Only 1 - 2 pounds removed so it is unlikely you would feel the difference. I had the work done prior to installing the 1.8 in my 1.6 car so I have no idea what difference that mod will h...

Hi Ian I have added extractors, 2 inch system all through and a louder muffler on the rear plus K&N filter, lightened standard flywheel and 14 degrees on the timing. My 1.8 is installed in a 1990 car. Am working on getting an aluminium flywheel and installing a RX7 flowmeter. Goes much better than a...

If you can remove a gearbox you can install a flywheel but you will need a torque wrench to do up the six flywheel bolts and a clutch alignment tool to align the clutch plate. Actually you can get way without a clutch alignment tool as you can feel the clutch plate around the side of the cover plate...

My Son's familia

Remember I posted recently about the crank nose problem. Well I had the thing welded up by Taylor's the other day. All up $485 and the car is good as new plus has more torque than before. As it was a mint car it was worth the investment. In my opinion short of doing a 1.8 engine swap this is the bes...

Timing Belt

Hi If you remove the cam cover you will be able to inspect the timing belt. I'm not sure if that will be very helpful as they look OK up until about 50km from breaking. My advice is to replace if you are worried as the inconvenience of it breaking will be a hassle. The standard engine will not do it...

I want to measure the performance (acceleration) of my MX5
before and after the installation of the flywheel.

Any ideas? It would be good to document the difference
which says in folklore about 0.5 sec 0 - 100.

How should I do this?

Hi there Good on you for having a go. I have had the engine out of my 5 a couple of times to sort out my 1.8 conversion and will be doing so again in a couple of months to install an aluminium flywheel. I have a good set of tools which are a must if you want to make things easy. The reason I would t...

Yep the Fidanza seems like the one. Anybody ever used one here? I'll use the standard 1.8 clutch even though I feel a Supercharger in my future or FI of some kind. I am looking to buy an aluminium flywheel. Does anybody know of a source in NZ for a 1.8? I'm going to the states in July so will try and get one shipped to my hotel while there if I cannot source one locally. Crank nose problem on the B6 Engine

Update

Rang Taylors and the price is $380 plus parts if I do the
assembly. Worth it for the car as it is a sweet little car.
Convertible with only 2 NZ owners since imported in 93.
Full service history, no rust and mint interior.

This is no MX5 but a nice little car never the less

Crank nose problem on the B6 Engine

Hi List My son has a Mazda Familia with the B6 engine but FWD. It started losing power (always was gut less) then died completely. I tried to check the cam timing but hey have different alignment marks to the MX5. Looked at the distributoe and found the rotor was pointing about 45 degrees out when i...

You will remember my light problem of a couple of weeks ago. I thought I had it fixed with contact clean - well they kept playing up. Rang John Andrew and found that the light and indicator switch detaches from the combination switch and can be purchased separately for $80. So after removing the ste...

They look good thanks. Now be aware that the next big thing will be MP3 audio from a DVD RW disk. Some systems are around now. This will mean 700 songs on a single layer disk and over 1200 on a dual layer disk. Be careful buying now as the new stuff will be main stream in six months. Me I'm looking ...

Head lights problem solved

Well I thought I'd update the list on the fix for my 1990 headlights. Problem was they became very unreliable on low beam. Just touching the stick caused them to go out. A couple of weeks ago they quit altogether. (still worked on high beam). I figured it was a switch problem. I priced a new switch ...

My lights are out

My lights have been getting a bit dodgy on low beam - often needing a stir of the stick to get them to go. Today they just refused on low beam no matter what. High beam is still OK but not popular with oncoming traffic. Probably the switch thing right? Anybody had this happen? What was the damage? D...

1.6 versus 1.8 (moving to crankshaft issue)

One wonders if it is a good idea to disturb these things but if you pay close attention to putting the key in the right way around, use loctite and torque to the correct setting then what could possibly go wrong? Not sure what you mean by the key hanging in mid air. It should engage the pully and th...

1.6 versus 1.8 (moving to crankshaft issue) and now temp sen

The fan may not be all of your trouble - call me gloomy if you like. Does the car get hot running at open road speeds? Mine started as a heat up in traffic and progressively got worse. Turning on the AC helped as both fans ran but it turned out that the radiator was clogged. Cost me $80 to get fixed...

1.6 versus 1.8

Hi Garry

Relatively straight forward once you have sourced a 1.8
engine. Flying Miata now do a kit that provides all you
need. Cost including an engine would be around $1500 if you
do all the work yourself. If you are in Auckland I would
help.

Cheers

Don
