Scan Tools

Can anyone recommend a good (but not too expensive) scan tool?

I want one for the MX5 and Legacy, but most of the US units - Autel, Innova - are not guaranteed to work on Japanese vehicles.

I can't give you a price, but I spoke to an upholsterer about recovering MX5 seats in general about a year ago, and his answer was "seriously expensive". He said that, as seats go, MX5s are difficult to do. Whether he was just not experienced enough (which I doubt as he has done some very nice work ...

Can't help on the tyre matters but you can mod the car after a cert providing the mods don't need certing, eg. you could upgrade the brakes, but couldn't fit adjustable coilovers.

Ben, when you started this project you were going to use the ATI damper. However I see you have gone for the BHJ. Any reason for this other than the BHJ is cheaper?

Can definitely recommend YouShop. Just got sway bars from FM and inlet valves from 949racing. In both cases, from the time the goods arrived at the YouShop warehouse in Oregon to the time they hit my doorstep, was 7 days. Communication is also excellent. Email updates all the time - arrival at wareh...

Fab9Tuning

Has anyone bought anything from Fab9Tuning in the US?
It's not I company I had seen until recently, but they seem to be well stocked with tuning bits.

The easy way to work out the drill size is to deduct the thread pitch from the thread size. Most 6mm grease nipples are 1.0mm pitch, so, yes, drill size would be 5.0mm.

That's my understanding of how it works.
I ordered some stuff from FM a few days ago.
I'm expecting to hear from YouShop next week.

Thanks for the link. RockAuto seems well stocked for MX5s, and shipping costs are reasonable for a change.
Pity they don't do performance parts.

Does anyone have a recommendation on where to buy a new front hub for an NA? During last weekend's race meeting it was clear that the bearing is shot.

It looks like everyone is jumping on the moneymaking bandwagon. At the Tasman Revival meeting at the weekend, it was announced that Pukekohe would be putting up its rates from around $11,000 for the 2 days, to $23,000, and they would start charging drivers for pits as well. At least at Hampton Downs...

It shouldn't get very hot if you aren't using any boost. What engine management system are you using, and if it's an add-on/replacement for the standard ECU, has the ignition timing been set correctly. If the timing is retarded it will send the underbonnet temperatures up big time.

As you know, Taupo 2 is all about acceleration, handling and cornering capability. With 280bhp/tonne and 255mm wide slicks, the car went like a scalded cat. A fun little circuit.

I don't know what they are like on an MX5, but we have RE002s on our Levin 2K Cup race car and they are great in both dry and wet conditions. I will be putting them on our NB when it needs new tyres soon.

They don't muck around, do they? I thought there were only a few working cars actually around (some of the show cars are static displays only).

I see the handbrake is on the RH side of the gear lever, as for the NC. Designing for the American market again!!!!!!

As built4speed says, get an approved helmet. The bottom end of the price range for these is around $400-500. Check out Chicane Racewear (HJC AR10 helmet) Vortex Racewear (Vortex Formula) and Flamecrusher (FF-S4).
