oh crap. door wont open

When ths hapened to me I had to wind down the windown and use a suitable bent piece of coat hanger wire to activate the unlock mechanism. The manuals were gooenough for me to work out which piece of the internal mechanism needed to triggered. I needed a fine beamed torch - one of thoseLED ones that r...

Brake Cylinder Brace

A fair point about it being flimsy. However, and I am not an engineer, but it is made from 6 steel with a welded on support plate in the corner to prevent any flexing. I appears to have no movement when I try to bend it, and the same when I watch it when someone else presses the brake pedal. But you...

Excuse the messy engine bay, but I have one that you are welcome to borrow to try. If all goes well, there should be a photograph attached to this post.

The boot lid looks to be standard - at least the high-level brake light anyway. Although it is hard to see from these shots, the interior is still mostly original too.

Have you ever thought that having eight cylinders in your MX5 is not enough? This one that I saw the other day has 12, arranged in a V.

Bridgestone Tyres

In November 2011 I was looking to replace the 14" tyres on my NZ, and I learned that the Bridgeston Grid III and RE101s are no longer available. It sounds as though the reason is the same as that for the Toyos, ie. that with the increased use of 15" and greater in new cars, this sort of tyre is no l...

It is time to put new tyres on my NA 1.6. However, I have found that the Bridgeston Grid III and RE101s are no longer available. what is the best aftermarket windblocker?

No worries at all. In truth, on the day we swapped cars we pu the two next
to each other and pulled them apart and put them back together agian with
the bits we each wanted to keep. Thnaks for the thought though.

What is the best aftermarket windblocker?

Mine is slightly different in that it fits in front of the style-bar and runs the full (internal) width of the car. It is only held in place by gravity really - and the fact that it is located by sliding in to channel screwed to the car at each end.

I have one made up in this style out of a perspex-type material - I'm not
sure if it is perspex, polycarbonate, Lexan or something else. You are most
welcome to borrow it to try it out. I am in Royal Oak, Auckland.

Missing, coughing and sputtering

I just had this same problem! I just (30 mins ago) replaced all of the spark plugs (they weren't looking too good anyway) but the problems remains. I guess I will have to shell out for some new leads as well.... I have a set of leads that you can borrow to try and diagnose the problem. I am in Roya...

Broken cable in electric window mechanism

I used a solder sucker to remove the old solder so that the hole was clear enough to accept the new cable. You will need to be very careful not to loose the old end pieces as the mouldings are sized to accept them. You will need to make sure that you have a lot of spare swear words if you do misplac...

Broken cable in electric window mechanism

The spare one that I bought has an OD of about 1.6mm. The main difficulty
that I had was finding a cable that was not made of stainless steel. Let me
know if you are not able to find one right away and you can use this one to
fix the window. We can find a replacement cable later.

Broken cable in electric window mechanism

The problem started when my passenger side power window stopped moving when I operated the up / down switch. I could still hear the motor humming and a quick look - after removing the inner door panel - confirmed that the one of the cables had broken ie. it was no longer under tension. The following...

Broken cable in electric window mechanism

I have had success in replacing this cable with a bicycle brake / gear cable. The difference in cost is $10 compared to $100 and more for the regulator. You will have to spend the time dismantling / rebuilding whichever option you choose. If you have a mind to fix it yourself, I can send you some no...

Horns

As an alternative to air horns - awkward to find space to fit - to replace the rather feeble original pair, I have chanced upon a second-hand pair of electric horns from a Mazda 6 wagon - newer than 2002. It would make sense that they are also found in other models in the Mazda range. The end result...

State Insurance - Excess (Excessive!)

When I bought my supercharged NA, I found that I had more success when I talked to someone in a more senior position than the person who first answered the call. I found that I was able to have a sensible discussion about the car which lead to the insurance being accepted, at no higher rate than my ...
